Crack of Least Resistance

All resisted manifestations eventually arrive through the crack of least resistance. Let’s review an Abraham quotation and fill in the gaps.

The quotation and some context

If you haven’t already, you can sign up for daily Abraham quotes here. Generally, they’re a very good way to remind yourself of the larger picture early in the day. However, yesterday’s email contained an unfortunate choice. Let’s reproduce it here and discuss it.

If your desire is strong enough, it doesn’t matter what your beliefs are. If you have a desire that is strong enough, that desire will be the dominant vibration, and it will over-ride any other vibration that you have.

Abraham, excerpted from Atlanta, GA on 9/13/97

The law of attraction delivers your desires but the results are always subject to the framework allowed by your beliefs. You get what you think about, always. Since your beliefs are thoughts that are more pervasive in your usual thought processes, they are obeyed more strictly than shorter-term desires.

Let’s ignore all our desires that have already been satisfied but rather deal with the unsatisfied ones. Your fulfilled desires have already bypassed the dynamic we’re describing today.

For a refresher on how the law of attraction operates within our beliefs, reread Watch for Premanifestations.

The usual advice

We all have a balancing act to deal with. On the one hand, we have our unfulfilled desires which the law of attraction can’t help but satisfy in the quickest and most impactful way possible. On the other hand are our limiting beliefs which must also be brought to fruition by the law of attraction. When these are working against each other, there’s a tug-of-war or a balancing act playing out.

The question you’re asking now is, which side wins?

Well, which side do you give more thought to?

The framework every one of us establishes based on our expectations and beliefs is fundamental to our physical experience. Some of the various aspects of this framework are more productive than others. It’s very much a good thing to have expectations like gravity and oxygen built into our core belief systems. Other beliefs are less helpful.

Beliefs or expectations about any limitation aren’t central to who we really are; they’re quite optional and self-limiting. Belief in limitations due to genetics can be reversed at any time. Expectations about physical discomfort are entirely your making and can begin reversing at any time you choose a different pattern of thought. All limitations are self-imposed, and all limiting beliefs can be replaced with less resisting beliefs.

We have two options for manifesting our desires.

  1. Soften the resistance to the desire (widen the crack of least resistance)
  2. Fan the flames of the desire

Yesterday’s Abraham quote speaks to the second option, however their advice is always to practice the first. This is why we think it’s an unfortunate piece of their message to isolate into a quotation as it’s contrary to the actionable information they teach.

Softening the resistance (widen the crack of least resistance)

This first option is the usual advice. If we can soothe the limiting belief, then we allow our desires to flow. Recognize that every subject is really two subjects in one. Pay attention to how you feel and aim to think better feeling thoughts.

Another option is to think of nothing more often! Meditate more, and live your life with a clearer mind. When we stop exercising unproductive thoughts, we let them fade into the past. Imagine a relatively clear-minded person who spends a large percentage of their thought processes on only what they want.

Abraham’s teachings and the rest of this website are generally about this approach. Widen the crack of least resistance. Provide the law of attraction with the most flexibility to satisfy all your desires. Soften your resistance until there’s very little of it on the topic.

Fan the flames of the desire

When Abraham spoke of this second approach, they were contrasting it to the usual first approach. Were we to amp up our desire without a softening of resistance, we get uncomfortable results. The law of attraction still has to obey our strongly held beliefs, but with enough fanning of the desire, the law of attraction will find a crack of least resistance within our beliefs and deliver the desire. Often with this approach, however, the process of receiving the result is less comfortable.

As an aside, we briefly covered an alternate version of this in The Mechanism of Free Will. Ramtha teaches us to consistently visualize our desires but to exclude any details of people, places, things, times, and events. By excluding the details, we implicitly give the law of attraction the maximum freedom to satisfy your desires. So it’s actually a combination of the two approaches. This is the ultimate softening of resistance, to remove it entirely.

Let’s finish with a few examples

A new motorcycle

Someone in Abraham’s hot seat once gave a very memorable example of this “process.” This person fanned the flames of their desire for a new motorcycle while maintaining beliefs of lack. They openly acknowledged complete disbelief about being able to achieve their goal in any way. He seemingly cut off every option the law of attraction would otherwise have had available.

Eventually, his desire became so amped up that a tipping point happened. The desire for the new motorcycle began to exceed his appreciation for the more mundane facets of life he was already living.

He experienced a motorcycle crash, and his insurance company did the rest.

Yes, the law of attraction satisfied his desires according to his belief system. No, it wasn’t a comfortable experience. He could have achieved the same manifestation much more comfortably had he gone with a softening of resistance instead of an amping of desire.

exiting through the crack of least resistance

Exiting through the crack of least resistance

This next example is intentionally dramatic. You certainly get the point already, but this second example nicely ties into a larger conversation that weaves through many articles elsewhere.

Pick any desire whether it’s an object or a situation. Suppose your limiting beliefs completely disallow the desire to manifest in physical experience, but your desire grows to such an extent that the law of attraction must satisfy it soon.

What’s the law of attraction to do in this case? What’s the crack of least resistance here?

Physical death is likely the next step.

There is no death, but a live physical human will eventually withdraw from physical life experience. At that moment, you exit the holodeck, and all resistance is left behind with the physical brain. Non-physical experience doesn’t have the buffer of time that physical experience has, so with no resistance to speak of all desires are manifest in very short order.

Nobody’s recommending this! Rather, being in the habit of softening resistance is a certain way to make physical life longer and more pleasant.

After the crack of least resistance grows

We were careful to start the article by talking about unfulfilled desires. Now, let’s generalize.

When something new but resisted lands on your list of desires, you have work to do. By softening your resistance and making peace with where you are, you can begin to allow it into your experience.

Once it manifests and becomes a regular part of your experience, then you have a much better vibration on the subject. You’re then used to knowing it’s possible and even expecting it. Originally, you needed the crack of least resistance to eventually allow the first manifestation. Now your belief system on the topic allows things to flow regularly and easily; there are many available avenues whereas before there was only a single crack of an avenue.

You can find examples of this in your personal life all over the place. It’s easier to find a new job only after you already have a job. How many times have you heard of a couple conceiving their first child immediately after they’ve given up and adopted? Think of more, and comment below.

This happens with communities too. A favorite example of ours is running a four-minute mile. Until it finally happened for an individual athlete (the crack of least resistance in this case), society thought it was an impossible dream. As we got more used to seeing it achieved regularly, even at the high school level, many more athletes reached this landmark themselves. Yes, training, nutrition, track surfaces, and shoes all came together to provide a chain of mechanisms, but the law of attraction will always provide more instances of desirable topics that have softer resistance.
